Today, September 22nd, 2023 would have been my brother Ray's 56th birthday if he had not chosen to end his life in 1994. He has now been gone longer than he was here on earth, yet it can feel as if it just happened yesterday. All it takes is when a familiar smell of his favorite food or the music from one of his favorite songs comes on the radio, it can trigger memories of when he was still here.
I call those triggers Emotional Landmines and they tend to knock anyone who is grieving off the path of their daily journey. My dream is that my music will help those that are struggling to verbalize the emotions they are experiencing and my songs and lyrics will let them know they are not alone in these feelings and they are not crazy for feeling them.
I have dreamed of starting a non profit that would be a place for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one by suicide to find information and comfort. My hope is that someone who is struggling with overwhelming emotions will hear my music and it will inspire them to reach out for help.
This has been a dream ever since I was asked to perform my Grieving and Healing music at the Arizona State Conference for Suicide Support Groups.
I also will be working to add more resources for any one who is experiencing the grief of losing a loved one, whether it was a loss due to a completed suicide or any other reason their loved one is no longer in their life.
The tasks required to establish a non profit have been tremendous, but it is a labor of love to do this work. If my music helps those that are grieving or even if it would prevent someone from taking their own life, it will have been worth all of the hard work.
My vision for the Ray of Light Project is to raise money to provide services that will be a bridge for those that are grieving and healing and guide them to local support groups and/or grief counselling.
I appreciate everyone's interest and patience as I work to expand the website, resources as well as provide updates on the progress we are making in the studio recording the Grief and Healing music.
You Broke Your Angel's Wings
I reached out to NAMI Payson, Arizona to ask permission to add their link to my resources page on the Ray Of Light Project website.
It opened the door to join forces to help those who struggle with mental health challenges. We also share a desire to connect people to resources to help them on their life's journey.
When I was asked to write a theme song for the NAMI of Payson's new podcast - Strength Beyond Struggle, it was both humbling and a little overwhelming. I have composed my original music for almost 40 years, but I had never been asked to compose a song with a specific theme.
As many of my challenges in life, I turned to prayer and asked for inspiration and help from my Heavenly Father to compose a song of encouragement. This song needed to encourage both the people needing the services as well as those that are providing the services for those in need.
NAMI is a bridge that connects people and resources. It has been an absolute pleasure to meet so many kind hearted volunteers working at NAMI. NAMI and Ray Of Light Project share the vision of connecting people to resources to find a healthy pathway while navigating through life's challenges.
I am excited to share that the song "It's Okay To Be Me" was well received by the team at NAMI and I am honored when they asked me to perform it live at the NAMI Arizona State conference.
It is available for purchase in the Store and proceeds will benefit the Ray Of Light Project.
